About the Herd: Ballinlig Shorthorns is a family run herd based in the heart of Ireland.Terry is the herd owner and he runs the farm with his wife Colette and daughter Amelda. Ballinlig Shorthorns is based in a rural part of Co. Westmeath six miles from Moate in an area called Ballinlig.

The idea to form the Pedigree Beef Shorthorn came from Terry’s love of the breed. Terry originated from a farming background in Tourmakeady, Co. Mayo, as he grew up on the farm his father always had Shorthorns in the herd and Terry grew fond of the breed. In the 2000’s Terry decided to add to his commercial herd and bring in the pedigree bloodlines of the Beef Shorthorn.

The interest and research started to grow into the Beef Shorthorn breed with Terry and Amelda, as a result the herd produced a very successful bull named Ballinlig Danzer. This bull calf was the start of Ballinlig Shorthorns entering the show ring in 2009. He brought great pride and joy to the family as he won nationwide at shows, taking numerous first places and most importantly he won first prize at the National Show in Tullamore 2009. He also won Connaught Champion Bull Calf and third place in the All Ireland Bull calf class in Stroketown that September.

Ballinlig Danzer was known throughout Ireland by many people for his success and to bring even greater success, he retained his first place title when he entered the show ring at the National Show in Tullamore the following year with his new owner.

This was the starting point of showing for our herd, since 2009 Ballinlig Shorthorns have bred exceptional Beef Shorthorns and without fail are successful each summer on the show circuit. Ballinlig Freeda was to follow on the success of Danzer as she took several prizes at shows in 2010 and is now breeding great quality calves. Another very successful bull we bred was Ballinlig Kizer who took the eye of many at shows with his flawless white coat. He also brought pride to the herd on winning at the National show in Tullamore in 2013, he also won Connaught Champion Bull Calf and came second in his All Ireland class in Strokestown 2013.

Our first All Ireland winner was Ballinlig Nakisa, a young sweet heifer out of the same dam as Ballinlig Freeda. Ballinlig Nakisa was crowned the All Ireland Junior Heifer 2013 in Strokestown Show. Through all the years of breeding it has been a real joy to work with the breed and to get the chance to exhibit is extremely joyful.
