About the Herd:
Monasteroris Milking Shorthorn’s is home to the herd bred by Michael Manley and his daughter Ann-Maree.
We purchased our first shorthorn in 1996 from the Carrowhubbock herd. In 2006 we purchased 100% pure shorthorn heifers and a breeding bull from the Rantonal herd in the UK. Our herd consists of about 50 milking cows with 40+ shorthorns in that number. We rear all our own replacements with approximately 35 youngstock. Our breeding goal centers on good feet and legs followed by mammary and then wide and powerful frames. Favourite bull of the past would have to be Kingsdale Libby’s Rebel.
In the tank this year we have Strickley True Perfection, Panorama Landmine, Oceanbrae Logic’s Plato and Lisnamulligan Fairway. Heifers that are milking well this year are from Shorthorn dams by Brieryside Golden Sand who is 25% Ayrshire 75% Holstein. Current classification results leaves us with 6 Excellent cows including Monasteroris Jennie Deans 8th EX 93 2E Emerald Expo Champion 2012 & 2014, 13 Very Good cows and 1 Very Good heifer. Herd average is Very Good 86 points after starting to get cows classified last year.
