About the Herd: Venus Milking Shorthorn herd was set up in 2001. We are a Spring Calving herd, supplying milk to Centenary Thurles Co-op. Our calving interval of 358days would be one of the best calving intervals in the co-op and our herd EBI is 128.00. Our very first Milking Shorthorn purchase was at the Dispersal Sale of the renowned Ballingarrane Herd in June OF 2001. On the day we purchased a number of cows in milk. Our first Stock bull Venus Warrior was bred from Ballingarrane Juliana 37th, sired by Cotehouse Darlngton Oxford. Warrior proved to be a very influential bull leaving very correct functional cows with great feet, locomotion and fertility, the majority are still milking in our herd to this day. In recent years we have used a number of imported bulls like Kingsdale Libby’s Rebel and Oceanbrae Logic’s Plato, Oxton Boundless, Pride’s Prophet. This year we have very impressive calves from Ransboro Barrington Dandy (RAN)and Marleycote Thunder(YMC). Post quotas cows that produce milk efficiently off grass will be key to a profitable dairy enterprise.
