About the Herd: The Ardnaskea Herd of Beef Shorthorns was established in 1996 by Pat Hehir. Ten years later in 2006 the herd produced its first show animal. Ardnaskea Angel a nice roan heifer was what got Pat and his daughter Rachel started in the show ring. She won many prizes as a heifer calf and yearling and once the rosettes began to gather, Pat & Rachel (who was only 8 years old at the time) were addicted to the white coat and the general buzz that one gets in the show ring.
Since then they have gone all over the country showing their cattle and winning many championships. They have won prizes at the Beef Expo in 2008 in Cillin Hill, Kilkenny with a roan bull – Ardnaskea Rodney and again in 2010 with a red heifer calf called Ardnaskea Angel 2nd. They have also have won Breed Champion of Tullamore Show twice with Ballylaffin Dana. First as a heifer in 2011 when not long purchased from James Whelan in Dunlavin and again in 2014 as a cow, she scooped the title once more. It must be said that this animal has been champion of many shows up & down the country and has brought tremendous enjoyment to the show ring. They also had success at the National Livestock Show in Tullamore in 2014 in the heifer calf class, taking 1st & 2nd prizes with two very nice roan heifers, one was a Dovea Sir James daughter and the other was by Cairnsmore Thrasher.
By using different A.I. bulls and matching them up with different cows, they strive to improve their herd from year to year to produce good quality dual purpose animals.
