About the Herd: The Knockagarry herd has been breeding pedigree Shorthorns for thirty years, founded on cattle purchased from the long established Ballingarrane herd in Clonmel.
The aim is to produce functional cattle that are able to perform in an Irish commercial environment.
From having met people over the years from home and overseas and in meeting breeders at two World Conferences, it is obvious that Irish Shorthorn genetics have had a major influence on the breed worldwide. With this in mind the summer calving herd has a policy of preserving traditional bloodlines and would encourage others to do likewise while they still exist. Older A.I. bulls currently in use include Denn Whirlwind, Deerpark Leader’s 4th, 5th & 8th, Deerpark Improver 34th, Newbliss Broadhooks Boy 3rd, Drumlara Silver Stroke.
Modern beef genetics are not neglected and pure, polled easy fleshing sires are used freely when available. Performance recording has been taking place for many years, initially with Breedplan and more recently with ICBF(Irish Cattle Breeding Federation). The herd was awarded a silver medal for performance reording by he RDS in 2013. The breed has nothing to fear, much to gain, and can only progress through reliable data honestly collected.
Although the herd does not show, it sees the showring as an important influence in bringing the breed to the wider farming audience and compliments those who put such time and effort into this aspect of breed promotion.
Stock are usually sold privately and people are welcome to call and view the herd.
