Record-Breaking Prices at the Southwestern Shorthorn Breeders Club 3rd Annual Sale

The Southwestern Shorthorn Breeders Club celebrated great success at their 3rd Annual Sale of Beef Shorthorn Cattle, held on Saturday, 27th September, achieving record-breaking prices and attracting a packed ringside and online bidders.

The day opened with a small pre-sale show, judged by Society President, Amelda Middleton Leonard and her husband Brian, who had the challenging task of selecting the top three animals from each section. Their chosen winners went on to achieve some of the day’s highest prices.

Maiden Heifer Section

Leading the sale was Belmont Broadhok Vera, a Caramba Lisdoonvara-sired heifer from Cristina Belmonte, Co. Kerry, who achieved a record €3,820. From the same yard and sire line, Belmont Lovely Vic followed closely with a price of €3,080.
Also in strong demand, Philip Salter of Co. Cork saw his Doon Erasmus daughter Castlehaven Jenny 4th sell for €3,400, while Paudie O’Sullivan received €3,050 for his February 2024-born heifer Currowside Roanie.

In-Calf Heifers

The in-calf section was topped by Marion and Donal Drinan’s Dunbullogue Callie 920, sired by Doon Giorgio, selling for €3,450. Callie is due to calve in early spring.

Weanling Heifers

Demand remained strong for younger stock, with Martin O’Neill’s February 2025-born Paddock Teresa (by Ballinlig Rocky out of Duncran Snowflake) selling for €3,340. Her stablemates Paddock Anna and Paddock Deirdre achieved €2,350 and €2,600 respectively.
Paudie O’Sullivan of Co. Kerry also enjoyed success, with his Ballyart Lucky YKK-sired weanling heifers Currowside Ruby and Currowside Lily selling for €2,900 and €2,550.
Rounding off the section, Patrick McCarthy of Co. Cork saw his March 2025-born Knockagarry Clarebur make €2,040.
