How to Register - Milking Shorthorns

Pedigree registrations must be carried out via our online animal register or by paper form which can be downloaded here from our website. This has been instructed by the Department body whom we have met in recent months.

Forms can also be posted out to breeders if required. Over the phone registrations are not permitted. This is a Department of Agriculture rule which must be adhered to as they are our governing body.

Please submit registrations as soon as possible to avoid late penalty fees.

Genotyping/DNA Testing Reminder for Milking Shorthorns:

  • From 1st March 2025, all dams born on/after 1st January 2022 must be DNA/genotyped before their progeny can be registered. The cost is borne by the breeder.
  • From 1st January 2027, entry into the herdbook will require that all female calves be DNA/genotyped  The cost is borne by the breeder.
  • Prior to this, any herd sires born on/after 1st January 2022 and joining the herd from 1st January 2024 joining from 1st January 2024 must also be DNA/genotyped. The cost is borne by the breeder.
  • Prior to this, all male calves born from 1st January 2024 must be DNA/genotyped. The cost is borne by the breeder.
  • Genotyping/DNA Testing: Please do this as soon as possible to obtain a pedigree certificate. This can be carried out by contacting ICBF on +353 (0)23 8820452 or via Herdplus and requesting a hair sample kit. Results generally take 3-4 weeks.

Please Note: certificates will NOT be issued until the necessary genotyping has been completed and correct results have been returned.
