Shannonside Shorthorn Breeders Club Sale Report – By Áine O’Donovan Nicholson

The Shannonside Shorthorn Breeders Club Sale took place on Saturday, 3rd October at Clare Marts, Ennis, Co. Clare, with an impressive 85% clearance rate.

Topping the sale at €3,700 was Lot 13, Rowanberry Velvet, bred and exhibited by Shane Brigdale, Ennis, Co. Clare. The 2024-born in-calf heifer is sired by Glenisla Merlin and out of Rowanberry Nightingale. She is in-calf to Creaga Dice and sold to an established pedigree Beef Shorthorn herd.

The top-priced bull, selling for €3,000, was Lot 15, Glannview Casino, bred and exhibited by Adrian Flatley, Kilkelly, Co. Mayo. The 13-month-old bull is sired by Crooked Post Compass and out of Glannview Ekin Su, a daughter of Doon Jupiter. He sold to a buyer in Co. Monaghan.

The top-priced maiden heifer was Lot 30, Castlehaven Primrose 13, who sold for €3,200. The January 2025-born roan heifer is sired by Creaga Vertigo and out of Castlehaven Primrose 8, by Waukaru Coppertop 464. She was sold to an established Beef Shorthorn herd. Castlehaven Primrose 13 was bred and exhibited by Philip Salter, Skibbereen, Co. Cork.

The top-priced weanling heifer sold for €2,800. Castlehaven Grayling 66, bred and exhibited by Philip Salter, Skibbereen, Co. Cork, is a January 2026-born heifer sired by Craigfaddock Parnassus and out of Castlehaven Grayling 59.

Speaking after the sale, Michael Conway, Secretary of the Shannonside Shorthorn Breeders Club, said: “We were delighted to see a large turnout at Ennis. Prime lots were making strong prices, with an 85% clearance. We were also delighted to see Lots 90, 91 and 93 being sold to Wales. Many thanks to all for your support.”
