Ricketstown Herd Visit

Ricketstown Herd Visit

The Kelly Family of Ricketstown Herd, Co. Carlow, held a special farm visit on Sunday 22nd September. The day began with refreshments, where attendees had an opportunity to catch up with one another. This was followed by a short drive to the herd.

On the farm, SHX animals from a dairy herd were available for viewing, these calves were by a Beef Shorthorn bull bred at Ricketstown herd. Michael Conway from the Shorthorn Marketing Company gave a short talk on the benefits of using Shorthorn genetics in a dairy herd and further explained the Beef Shorthorn Premium available through the Shorthorn Marketing Company.

This was followed by viewing some Pedigree Beef Shorthorn cows, where Paul Boal from IHFA gave a great explanation on classification of animals.

Those in attendance had an opportunity to study the herd catalogue and view some top-class animals bred by The Kelly Family. As the day came to a close, Amelda Middleton Leonard, President of the Irish Shorthorn Society, made a presentation to the Kelly Family. It was a wonderful day from start to finish.

We would like to thank Carmel, PJ, Martin, Annie and the extended Kelly Family for hosting this special day, for their hospitalty, and for their wonderful display of Beef Shorthorn cattle. Thank you to those who attended from near and far, and to Denise Sweeney Barber for the lovely photos.
