Moyside/Croghan Spring Sale Report

The Moyside/Croghan Shorthorn Breeders Clubs held their annual Spring Sale on Monday 15th April in Elphin Mart Co. Roscommon by kind permission of the mart management. Mr. Tom Cox, who is no stranger to the Shorthorn breed, was the auctioneer on the evening. With the ringside full and over 60 lots on offer there certainly was plenty of choice for those in attendance and watching online.

In the female section, top price maiden heifer was lot no. 45B – ‘‘Tintrim Fiach’’. This April ‘23 roan heifer, the property of Marie and Anthony Mc Namara, Co. Clare, sold for €2,100 to Mr. Ronan O’Hare Co. Galway. Fiach boasted a 5-star replacement value of €135. She is sired by Caramba Nooaff and out of a Rowanberry Frazer dam. Lot no. 45A Fiach’s twin sister – ‘’Tintrim Fatima’’ achieved joint second highest price of €1,850, purchased by Mr. John Carroll Co. Mayo. Also achieving €1,850 was lot no. 47C – ‘’Listigue Linda’’ the property of Joe and James Cunney Co. Sligo. This March ‘23 daughter of Napoleon of Upsall and out of a Doon Erasmus dam was purchased by Mr. Dermot Connolly Co. Galway.

In the in-calf section top price of €2,000 was paid for lot no. 29A the property of Mr. Cecil Bowes Co. Leitrim. A daughter of Finiskill Bressie and in-calf to Finiskill Henry, ‘’Corawallen Jade’’ was purchased by Mr. Roy Mooreherd Co. Longford. Mr. Bowes also sold 29B – ‘’Corawallen Gloria 617’’ to Mr. Tom Humphrey Co. Leitrim for €1,900.

In the male section 8 bulls were sent forward for sale on the evening with a full clearance recorded. Topping out at €2,300 was lot no. 53A “Milltown Pheonix”, the property of Mr. Sean Casement Co. Westmeath. This red 5-star bull with a replacement value of €166 is sired by Milltown Jake (a son of Hussar of Upsall). His dam Castlehaven Grayling 47 is a granddaughter of Chapelton Typhoon. Phoenix was purchased by Mr. Noel Bohan Co. Leitrim.

Second and third priced bulls were sold by Mr. Philip Mc Gauren Co. Cavan. Lot no. 55A – ‘’Coolbawn Seamus’’ a son of Doon Jupiter and from a Grousehall dam changed hands at €2,150 to Mr. Dominic Vesey Co. Mayo. Lot no. 56A – ‘’Coolbawn Ben’’ also a son of Doon Jupiter and from a Grousehall dam was sold for €2,000 to Mr. Val Keane Co. Roscommon.

Other notable prices included lot 32B – ‘’Ballylaffin Quack’’ property of Mr. Patrick Hehir Co. Clare and purchased by Ms. Ethel Lloyd Co. Westmeath at €1,750. Lot 38C – ‘’Bellview Gardenia’’, property of Jim and Mary Kilcullen Co. Sligo was sold to Mr. Dermot Connolly Co. Galway for €1,620. Another heifer of Patrick Hehir’s lot 39A – ‘’Ardnaskea Lacey’’ became the property of Mr. Tom Humphrey Co. Leitrim at €1,600.
