Southwestern Shorthorn Breeders Club – Sale Report
The 2nd autumn sale of pedigree & commercial Beef Shorthorns took place in Macroom, Co. Cork on Saturday 28th September. There were 40 pedigrees and 17 commercials on offer.
There was a demand for stylish in-calf heifers on the day. Topping the in-calf section at €1960, was Lot 707 ‘Castlecove Lily’, property of Eileen McGillicuddy, Co. Kerry. The August 2022 born, roan heifer is sired by Doon Jeremiah SH4932 and out of Kilbeagh bred cow.
Lot 702 ‘Clydagh Fox’, property of John Crowley, Co. Cork and bred by Anthony O’Sullivan, Co. Kerry made €1840. The red heifer is sired by Ballaghcross Wiseman and out of a Whitecasle Prince sired dam.
Next up was the maiden heifer section, where once again, quality stock was in demand. Marion & Donal Drinan’s heifer lot 711, ‘Dunbullogue Dana 941’ topped this section. The March 2023 born heifer made €1470.
Another heifer from the Dunbullogue Herd, lot 712 ‘Dunbullogue Dympna 947’, made €1310. Both heifers are sired by Knockagarry Ace 928.
Quality weanling heifers made great prices on the day. Anthony O’Sullivan, Co. Kerry received €1270 for his March 2024 born heifer, ‘Clydagh Jumper’. Paudie O’Sullivan’s halter-trained, red heifer, ‘Currowside Rose’ topped the weanling section at €1300. The red heifer was born in February 2024 and is sired by SH8703 Craigfaddock Parnassus.
In the male section, lot 737 ‘Clonina Ranaghan’ tapped out at €1750 for Yvonne & Michael Conway, Co. Clare. The September 2023 born; white bull boasts a replacement index of €146 making him 5 stars across all breeds.
Also in this section, lot 740 ‘Paddock Dan’ property of Martin O’Neill, Co. Cork, made €1100. The February 2024 born bull who is sired by Tintrim Dubarry is also 5 stars.
Once the pedigree section was complete, the sale moved onto the commercials. Some prices in this section are as follows:
